Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. A book is a gift you can open again and again, once you learn to read, you will be forever free. There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book. Children are made readers on the laps of their parents. Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift. ”To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” Victor Hugo. Read. Everything you can get your hands on. Read until words become your friends. Then when you need to find one, they will jump into your mind, waving their hands for you to pick them. And you can select whichever you like, just like a captain choosing a stickball team.

Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance. To teach is to learn twice. What we learn with pleasure we never forget. The best teachers are those who show you where to look but don’t tell you what to see. “Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.” Chinese Proverb. If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.

At KE759 Child and Youth Development Centre, promotion of literacy of our registered beneficiaries is cardinal! As well as that of their respective caregivers that is why we commenced a church-based private primary school in January 2015 where all pupils cum registered beneficiaries learn and we too started an adult education class in 2017 where 28 caregivers actively and attentively learn. We have been equipping these learning institutions that we own and run with relevant and approved teaching and learning materials using the already available resources as well as networking to mobilize resources from other like-minded organizations and institutions. Quality education is the Sustainable Development Goal number 4! So we are in alignment with it and most importantly, we are promoting cognitive development of our registered beneficiaries. This time round we bought spiritual development books from iServe Africa organization that also freely posted a missionary to our church for two years for spiritual nourishment; this is aimed to promote spiritual growth of our clients, especially registered youths hence leading to holistic development of each of registered beneficiary at a time.
